The last two months has seen great developments towards universal acceptance of the cannabis plant with 2 countries in the EU taking major steps to legalise recreational use.

Malta has become the first country in Europe to legalise the cultivation and personal use of cannabis. Last year the United Nations reclassified cannabis to recognise its therapeutic uses and it is thought that this change influenced the decision to legalise. Over 18’s will be allowed to carry up to seven grams and grow four plants at their homes, though smoking in public or infant of children will remain illegal.

In other news, the three parties in Germany’s new coalition government announced that they planned to legalise cannabis in an announcement back in November.

The statement suggested that the government would allow the sale of cannabis to adults for recreational purposes in licensed shops. However there has been no formal timeline for these changes to go through.

This is great news and highlights how countries of all sizes can approach the inevitable change from restrictions to universal acceptance of the cannabis plant.
